The Boss 302 Mustang, introduced in 1969, was really a street legal Trans-Am racer, a homologation special, combining the best handling of any car from Detroit with grace, style and, of course, power. The car was named Boss 302 after its 5 litre (302 cu in) engine and Boss after Bunkie Knudsen, recently recruited from G.M., who bought the car into being as a rival for the Camaro Z28. Officially rated at 290 bhp but actually reckoned to produce nearer 400, the car was capable of a sub 15 second mile and a top speed of 118 mph at a cost of just $3588, 1934 found homes that year. For 1970 the outer headlamps were replaced by false air intakes, and with the Trans-Am title going to the Bud Moores Boss 302, driven by Parnelli Jones and George Follmer, a further 6319 were sold.
